The Tibetan Association of Washington (TAW) is a non-profit organization of Tibetans in the state of Washington. It strives to preserve and promote the unique Tibetan cultural traditions within the Tibetan Community and share our ancient cultural traditions with Washingtonians and the rest of North America.
TAW started with just only about 25 Tibetan families in the late 1980s. With the help of the resettlement project of 1000 Tibetans by the US congress, 50 Tibetans settled in Washington State in 1991-’92. Family members of 50 Tibetans were reunited and many have since started new families here. Currently, there are approximately 400 Tibetans/Tibetan Americans in Washington and many more are relocating from other states.
TAW is committed to the principle of non-violence and supports the leadership of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Spiritual leader of Tibet. TAW is dedicated to highlighting the vibrancy of Tibetan culture, performing and visual arts, including writing and literature. We want to provide a platform that will serve as means to support, promote and preserve Tibet’s artistic heritage and to seek wider exposure of Tibetan artists and empower them to continue learning and preserving their artistic traditions.
